Open source Meta Muse alternative
Updated October 7, 2026.
Want an open source Meta Muse alternative you can run yourself? Muse is the personal AI agent Meta introduced on September 8, 2026. It lives on a virtual machine Meta operates, you reach it through the Muse app or WhatsApp, and Meta says it carries on working after you close the app.
Krypton takes the opposite approach. It is open source, the model and the computer are your call, and every part of the stack can live on hardware you control. What follows compares public descriptions. It is not a measured benchmark.
- Runs on a server you own
- Your model, your key
- Apache-2.0 source
- Hosted by Meta
- Runs Muse Spark
- Muse app and WhatsApp
Krypton vs Muse, side by side
| Topic | Krypton | Muse |
|---|---|---|
| Product | An open source home for persistent AI teammates, currently in beta. | Meta's personal AI agent. According to Meta, it handles tasks and longer-running goals instead of just answering questions. |
| Who runs it | You, when you self-host with Docker or connect the desktop and mobile apps to a server you operate. Prefer not to? Krypton Cloud (beta) runs it for you. | Meta. The agent lives on Muse Secure VM, a cloud virtual machine dedicated to it, together with data pulled from the services you connect. In a September 29, 2026 post, Meta gives availability as the US and Canada. |
| Source | Public on GitHub under Apache-2.0. | A hosted service operated by Meta. |
| Model | Any supported provider with credentials you bring, a custom model server included. | Muse Spark, which Meta's launch announcement presents as the model behind the agent. |
| Computer | Each bot gets a sandboxed desktop with a browser, terminal, and files, running on a team computer everyone shares or on a private one kept apart. Docker on your own machine is the default, and you can swap in E2B, Daytona, CreateOS, Boat, or a trusted computer of your own. | A browser running on Muse Secure VM, which Meta says the agent can open to complete forms and to handle jobs like email and travel booking. Per the Connect recap, Muse for Mac can operate apps on that Mac once you allow it. |
| Connected apps | Pick Composio or Pipedream Connect, or install your own Treg, remote MCP, or OpenAPI source. The server encrypts connector credentials, and the API never hands them back. | You decide which apps Muse may touch and how much access each gets. Meta offers its own connectors, work and shopping tools among them, plus custom connectors. |
| Ongoing work | Every bot has its own conversations, memory, routines, and history. Bots write facts to memory without being asked, and the team rules turn a procedure that worked into a skill any bot in the workspace can pick up. Routines are plain Markdown you can read, and they can run on a schedule. Bots can hand work to a peer bot or to a short-lived subagent. | Meta says Muse continues after you close the app and returns when something changes or it needs your sign-off. |
| Approval | You draw the boundaries. When a task crosses one, the bot stops and asks first, and every action lands in an audit log. | According to Meta, Muse checks in before sensitive steps like sending an email or making a payment, and it keeps an audit trail. Per the small-business post, it publishes, sends, or spends nothing until you approve. An opt-out exists for having your interactions train Meta's models. Meta states that conversations and VM data stay out of its ad systems, and that Muse can use stored credentials without seeing the passwords. |
| Where you use it | Web, Electron desktop, and Expo mobile clients. Add a Cartesia, ElevenLabs, Fish Audio, or OpenAI key and voice reads replies aloud, takes dictation, and lets you phone a bot. | At launch Meta named muse.ai, WhatsApp, and the Muse app for Android and iOS. The Connect recap adds a Mac app, a voice mode you can customize, and, over the coming months, Muse on AI glasses. |
Why an open source, self-hosted agent
- Every line is public on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 license.
- Deploy from the published Docker images or straight from source, on hardware you control. The desktop app can launch that stack on your computer or connect to a server you already operate.
- Model credentials are yours to bring. Connector credentials stay encrypted on the server, and the API never returns them.
- Routines are Markdown you can read. Bots stop for your approval at the boundaries you set, and each action is written to an audit log.
- Web, Electron desktop, and Expo mobile are all clients of one API, so the same bots follow you everywhere.
Try Krypton your way
Self-host it on your own machine, or skip the setup with Krypton Cloud, now in beta.
Muse alternative: common questions
Is Krypton a replacement for Muse?
Not one for one. Muse is a hosted agent from Meta, built around its own app, WhatsApp, and a Meta-operated virtual machine. Krypton is open source, built for persistent AI teammates, and runs on infrastructure you control. Both keep working past a single chat; where they part ways is hosting, model choice, and which surfaces come built in.
Can I self-host Krypton?
Yes, today. Use the published Docker images or build from a source checkout. If you would rather not run servers, hosted Krypton Cloud is in beta.
Does Krypton come with WhatsApp access, shopping checkout, or AI glasses like Muse?
No, those are Muse features Meta describes. Krypton ships as a web app, an Electron desktop app, and an Expo mobile app. For voice, Krypton uses a key you supply from Cartesia, ElevenLabs, Fish Audio, or OpenAI.
Where does the Muse information come from?
We built the Muse column from three Meta posts: the launch (September 8, 2026), the Connect recap (September 23, 2026), and the small-business announcement (September 29, 2026). Confirm a capability in those posts before you depend on it.
